From September 1949 to the end of June 1950, platoon commander Sub-Lieutenant Nigel Thomas Bagnall of the 1st Battalion, the Green Howards, was engaged in intensive counter-terrorist operations in the Pahang and Negri Sembilan states. Bagnall’s – often clandestine – activities proved time and again the value of intelligence gathering in the field that could be converted into successful anti-terrorist operations.

Sub-Lieutenant Bagnall was rewarded with the Military Cross (MC) and subsequently employed in the first six months of 1952 as an intelligence officer. His award appeared in the 1 May 1953 London Gazette. His recommendation citation for the MC, endorsed by Commander-in-Chief Far East Land Forces, General Sir John Harding, reads:

For much of this period he has commanded an isolated detachment at Kampong Menchis [east of Kuala Lumpur]. When he was there in November 1949, the whole area was virtually bandit controlled. In less than two months, he achieved with his force, a measure of success far beyond what could be expected of his small force. The whole area was systematically combed and as a result of Lieutenant Bagnall’s personal drive, gallantry and determination, 11 bandit agents were arrested and 16 camps located and destroyed. During the Christmas period, a minor engagement was fought resulting ultimately in the death of one bandit. Lieutenant Bagnall’s resolute and untiring devotion to duty resulted in the pacification of the area and to the relief of the Military Forces by the Police.
